Day and Night 8

 June 22nd of 2023

Day 8

    As the days go on, I feel that every morning feels the same. Although, today was a big breakfast day!! It was Raquel and I’s turn to help with breakfast. We started helping Monet with peeling the potatoes and cracking the eggs. I scrambled two cartons of eggs with a somewhat small whisk. I didn’t mind it, I’ve been baking for a long time so I worked with what I had! After the eggs were done, we waited for the potatoes and bacon to finish. Once breakfast was ready, I made myself a hot chocolate for the cold morning! Skip forward after breakfast, science day took place!! We did some more gram stains with the water samples we took from all the places we have visited. I did my gram stain with the Bird Creek sample! We did a lot of tests with our samples. After we did all our notes and research, it was microscope time! When I looked snide the microscope at the stain, it was really colorful! The first time we had done a gram stain, it wasn’t as colorful as this time so looking at it was almost beautiful!! While looking at the glass, we took notes on what we saw! For example, the shape of the cells, the color, and even drew out the cells! After that, it was getting a bit late, so we hit the showers before it got too late just in time for dinner!

Night 8

    We all started getting ready to go to the showers, so the first group that was up was Joellene, Raquel, Lis, and I. We had all gotten quarters earlier that day since the showers here take money. And it’s only for two minutes. I had to plan it out and put shampoo on my hair and soap on myself. Once I put in the quarters, it was go time! The shower literally started off cold and my first thought was like “what the heck”… it only lasted like around five seconds until the water heated up like boiling water! I tried to switch it to the middle but no, it was either too hot, or too cold. I just said screw it and showered in the burning hot water, then the shower turned off when time was up and I still wanted to rinse my hair so I rinsed it with the really cold water. After everyone showered, we went back to the campsite and the next group went! After Monet got done with her shower, they dropped her back off at the campsite and she started taking out and preparing the dinner for that night. Dinner was homemade pizza!!! When everyone was back from taking their showers, James started taking everyone’s orders with a pen and notebook! It was pretty funny but also, very cool! I want to say that the pizza was absolutely delicious! After that, there were some blueberry muffins so I decided to go for one. After dinner, Raquel and I did the dishes and got done after a while. Lis also jumped in and started to help us which we were very grateful for! After that, Raquel and Lis went to go do their own thing and I started charging my devices to prepare for the next morning. I sat around the campfire and started talking with Kyal! It was really fun and I really enjoyed having a conversation with him! He is a pretty cool guy overall so if you ever wanna talk with him, it’ll be a chill time! It was around 10:45ish so I decided to go back to the tent so I could put my clothes in my duffel bag. Once I did that, I headed off to sleep and awaited Day 9, where we would be doing Plant Surveys!!

Day 13

 June 27th of 2025 Day 13     Today we were able to wake up a little later!! We woke up at around 7:00 am and had our breakfast! At 8:30 am, we started to finish up our lab work so we could do our gram stain research later at the conference room we were in yesterday. We then picked up all our stuff since we had to be in the suburbans at 12:15 due to us going to the Walla Walla Hatchery for a tour! We arrived like in two minutes and went inside.  We met Thomas Tallbull, the manager at the Hatchery! He was kind enough to give us a tour around the hatchery. He explained how the place worked and even showed us the big control panel that controls pretty much the whole facility. We saw these tiny fish all over the facility and even saw rainbow trout. Once we were done with the tour, we headed over the Umatilla Tribal Agency to finish out gram stain research projects and worked on our water quality charts. Day and Night 12

 June 27th of 2025 Day 12     It was such a busy day today. We started out by eating breakfast and then got straight into the suburbans. We even had to pack clothes so we could shower right after our work. The first place we went to was to a plant nursery where we met with a very cool and fun lady.      Her name is Gail Redberg. She is the manager at the CTUIR Plant Nursery. She got a Bachelors in Biology Education at CWU and then decided to teach for a while. She even taught Bio for a year in Canada. Gail also got her Masters in Biology at Walla Walla University.      Gail gave us a tour around the plant nursery and we eventually helped her do some work. A group trimmed some the plants while Jessica and I organized the plants so they could have better access to the sun. We spent about 30 minutes to an hour out there but I didn't mind! Day 2!!!!

 June 16th of 2025!      It is officially Day 2 of the trip and surprisingly, I slept very comfortably in the tent last night! I did move around a bit but I didn't fall off the mini air mattress! I also woke up a few times when it got cold outside! So I just got in my sleeping bag and went back to sleep! Anyway, we all woke up around 7:30 but I got out of my tent like around 8:00 to go have breakfast! Today I had cereal and coffee for breakfast! Lis and I then went to a table where we packed our lunch for the day! After that, we picked up everything and headed to the suburbans to get ready for our science project! We started off with funny stories and laughs! I eventually put on my earbuds and went on my device and listened to some music while it was quiet!
